The potential for children to learn and have fun is limitless on the Internet.     However, they can also fall prey to exploitation, as is the case in other areas of life.      Predators do use emails and chatrooms to make contact with children and send them sexual solicitations.

Internet child sexual exploitation is a very real problem and should not be taken lightly.

One out of Five children is subjected to sexual solicitation.

Tips for kids:

Chief Deputy James Lugar of the Grant County Sheriff's Department,Indiana says children can play an important part in preventing abductions:

Don't spend time unsupervised on school grounds or playgrounds after hours.

Never take shortcuts home from school; stay on sidewalks.

Never tell people who call that you are home alone.

Never answer the door if you are home alone.

Never take candy or gifts from strangers.

Get away as quickly as possible if you think you are being followed.

Tips for parents:

Lugar and Gas City Police Captain David Kinnunen offer this advice for parents:

Be aware of what your child is wearing, for description purposes.

Have a list of you child's habits available.

Have an up-to-date photo, fingerprints and DNA samples of your child available.

Keep a phone list of friends who may have information about your child.

Avoid marking your child's name on clothing in the open; children are more trusting of people who know their names.

Don't leave children alone in a public place.

Always accompany children to public bathrooms.

Teach children to dial 911 and how to make a long-distance call.

Make sure your children know full names for you and your spouse, their home address and their telephone number.

Sarah's Law calls for a range of measures to curb and control paedophiles. But at its heart, we want Sarah's Law to enshrine one simple reform.

That is: Controlled Access To Information...

The LEGAL RIGHT of every parent to know the identity of serious child sex offenders living in their community.

However, with severe penalties in place for anybody who misuses this information.

Since launching our FOR SARAH campaign in July 2000, the News of the World has achieved 14 pieces of new legislation to protect our children.

Importantly, Home Secretary David Blunkett has pledged legislation to ensure no sex offender can ever be freed until it is certain they pose no risk to our children
