A Christmas Of Domestic Violence
Memories of a Christmas past, too painful to recall
Huddling with her children, in the darkness of the hall
Her face now showing bruises, with tears that had not dried
Her youngest child looked up at her, and said "Mommy please don't cry".
Yet another joyous occasion, had yielded another hell
While the freshest smell of liquor, permeated where she fell
He had taken his fist and aimed it, for her lips that once did smile
His superior strength had rendered her, to a slumping bloody pile.
The children's screams had echoed through, the neighbourhood late at night
Then sirens pierced this evening, hearts pounding filled with fright
Entering the house the officers came, upon a scene that brought them shock
For their on the floor lay Mother, broken jaw unable to talk.
The husband who had let them in, now stood without uttering a sound
When asked how his wife had suffered such blows, he remarked she had fallen down
An ambulance then was called to the scene, and the woman was whisked away
For yet another visit, to Emergency on Christmas day.
Her children had not stopped sobbing, while the policeman gave them a hug
Assuring them that their Mom was okay, and reminding them of her undying love
Arrangements were made for the grandparents, to come and take the children away
Until Mommy was able to join them, perhaps on the following day.
But then the children's aid stepped in, and investigated what had gone on
Informing the heart broken Mother, the home environment for children was wrong
Only then did she come to realize, that change in their life's must take place
To leave her abusive husband, to keep her and the children safe.
Only one year later on a bright Christmas morn, stood a tree surrounded by peace
No bruises, no tears, no frightened children, a Mothers courage had given new lease
As for the father he spent three days in jail, and was charged with domestic assault
A mere pittance of time he should have been locked, far away in a sealed up vault.
